Having marked their second anniversary since joining Ovenclean in October 2015 – the UK’s longest established and most successful domestic oven cleaning franchise – husband and wife team Dean and Amy Wilson are thrilled they took the leap into self-employment. With their diary booked up 1-2 weeks in advance, doing 3-4 jobs per day, they are already benefitting from repeat customers and word-of-mouth recommendation!
Dean enjoyed his previous role working as part of a team under another franchise business owner, but could see no clear route for career progression and had always liked the idea of working for himself. He also knew there was a huge market for professional oven cleaners, so when he spotted the Ovenclean opportunity in the newspaper, it instantly appealed.
"We came along to an Open day and were so impressed. Everything was extremely professional, it wasn’t at all pushy and it really put us at ease. We left on a high and couldn’t wait to get going!" explains Dean. "My trainer was absolutely fantastic – we had a blast and still talk to each other regularly, even if it’s not about oven cleaning. The support from Head Office has also been amazing – everything Ovenclean promised, they’ve delivered! We couldn’t ask for more really."
The couple have managed to split the work so Dean goes out and does the cleaning, whilst Amy manages the diary, speaks to the customers and takes bookings, enabling her to stay at home to look after their two children at the same time.
"The best thing about becoming an Ovenclean franchisee is the freedom. Ok, I’m working six days per week at the moment, but that’s my choice. If I want to take some time off I can, without having to ask permission! We’re also planning a family holiday before the Christmas rush, which we haven’t been able to do for a few years now and I’m usually back before 5pm, so I can spend time with my son, which I never used to be able to do," Dean smiles.
"Looking to the future, we’d like to grow the business enough to be able to take on a second van and expand our territory further," Dean concludes. "But for now we’re more than happy with how it’s going and really enjoying our new lifestyle."
