Gordon Amess’ Hire A Hubby Business Covers Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.

4th May 2017

Hire a Hubby presented Gordon Amess the opportunity to invest in a business doing the things he enjoyed.

Gordon’s handyman services cover some of Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. Previously working in a commercial refrigeration business, Gordon wanted to do something practical and hands on. Hire a Hubby presented the opportunity to invest in a business doing the things he enjoyed.

Hire A Hubby - Gordon AmessHow does your previous experience assist you in the running of your franchise?

Whilst my previous experience was with a commercial customer base I have found the transition to the domestic market relatively easy. The administrative and accounts experience I gained in the refrigeration business has helped me immensely.

How has your life changed since investing in a Hire a Hubby franchise? Do you have a good work-life balance?

In the commercial refrigeration business I was driving an average of 250 miles per day, working at least six days a week, including public holidays, and working at least 12 hours a day. My partner does not drive and so had to catch a bus or taxi to work and relied on lifts to get home.

Since starting my Hire a Hubby franchise I now plan my days so that I can take my partner to work and pick her up at the end of the day. There are days when the workload dictates that I cannot drop her off or collect her, but these are no longer the norm. It seems to be a small thing but this is indicative of the amount of time the franchise now allows me to spend with my partner. In refrigeration the earliest I got home was 8pm, now it’s the latest I get home.

What about training and support?

The training provided by Hire a Hubby was extensive and very beneficial. The fact that I have my own business but with a great bunch of people just a phone call away to help with or discuss anything I need is incredibly reassuring. As I develop my business and gain experience and confidence I find that I need to call them less and less but I know that they are still there whenever I need them.

Have you got any plans for expansion?

As my business is only two-and-a-half months old, I am only just reaching my first goal, which is to break even. If things continue the way they are I will definitely be looking to take on someone.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a vehicle-based franchise?

If you have the drive and self-control to start you own business a van-based business is the way to go. A massive advantage is having advertising on the side of a van. I have even had a lady approach me for a quote whilst I was trying to put fuel in my van.

Describe a typical day…

I find that with Hire a Hubby every day is different. In one week I can hang pictures, change a light fitting and hang mirrors for one customer, then replace fence panels and posts for another customer.
