The first franchise in the Furniture Clinic network started in Gateshead in 2008, and was owned outright by founders of the company, Ben & Keith Staerck. Upon realising the demand for their service, the pair sold the franchise to Manager Craig Cavanagh so they could concentrate on developing the franchise network nationally.
The company has since sold 15 franchises nationwide and continues to expand quickly, but their original Gateshead franchise still remains an outstanding success. Now owned by previous franchise manager Craig Cavanagh the company has quickly grown to become a household name in the North East.
Director, Craig say’s; “ We’ve continued to advertise heavily from day one, which has brought in regular work and it seems the more work we do, the more recommendations and repeat custom we’re getting. In addition to this, we’re starting to generate positive leads with many local businesses who continue to use our services when the leather products they sell become damaged.”
Since purchasing the Gateshead franchise, Craig purchased an additional 2 areas in late 2008 - Newcastle East & Newcastle West, in an effort to continue with his plans of expansion.
“Both areas have grown well for me and are now productive parts of the business. There is still plenty of room for growth within both areas but I wanted to secure these territories quickly, which is the reasoning behind a quick purchase” Adds Craig.
Early this year, seeing the success of his sibling, Paul Cavanagh bought into the Furniture Clinic franchise taking on the County Durham franchise. Together, the brothers have a workforce of five leather technicians & upholsterers, cleaning, repairing & restoring leather items throughout the North East.
Company Director, Paul ads; “Leather is used in so many ways from furniture & car interiors to clothes, shoes & handbags, and in every use it becomes damaged. As Furniture Clinic franchisee’s we are able to fix virtually any type of damage on leather, from scuffs & scratches through to the complete restoration or colour change of all leather items. This unique service allows us to repair many items of leather at a fraction of the cost of replacement, and so, brings us a great deal of business.”
Furniture Clinic offer a van based franchise where a franchisee visits customers in their home, on a daily basis fixing minor problems with leather. As the business grows and a franchisee takes on larger work, they can expand their business into premises, something many of Furniture Clinics franchisee’s have done, including the Cavanaghs.
Director of Sales & Franchising for Furniture Clinic Ben Staerck ads; “Furniture Clinic is truly a unique franchise with a very exciting future. We are in our infancy as a franchise, but have played an important role in the leather sector since 1990 where we have been manufacturing specialist cleaning & repair products for leather.
We have great plans for the future of our franchise network and see many possibilities of expansion in coming years. The majority of our work currently comes from the general public, but as we expand our network we’re looking to take on contracts with pub & hotel chains, furniture shops, car dealerships & insurance companies. The possibilities of potential business are endless, and we’re seeking franchisee’s nationwide to help us get closer to our targets.”
