OSCAR and the second generation - Chris McGee talks to us about following in the footsteps of his parents, after their retirement, with his own OSCAR business in North Nottinghamshire.
Sometimes things happen for a reason and when my parents Peter and Avril McGee sold their successful south Nottinghamshire OSCAR franchise in exchange for retirement, little did I know that I would be following on in their footsteps - albeit in a neighbouring area and three years later.
I enjoyed eleven years of supporting my parents in business. I was old enough to get involved - managing the holiday breaks, backup with storekeeping and keeping the place tidy. At the time it was a novelty to do something different from my normal day job.
But times change and I was ready to rethink my future. Throughout my career I had dealt with the public but the past twelve years in a sales capacity tempted me to use these skills in my own business. While recalling my parents’ success I looked at the opportunities available in franchising, only to discover that an OSCAR resale business was available within my own postcode area.
There was no hesitation in taking things to the next stage. My knowledge of OSCAR and the concept of the business combined with an open line of communication and excellent support from Head Office gave me a very good start. I now have the best of both worlds – I am working from home, with the flexibility of planning my days around customers and family. The added pleasure of caring for pets alongside Woody, my Cocker Spaniel, who has been thriving on OSCAR food for many years, gives me a feeling of complete satisfaction.
Despite what has gone before me this is very much the beginning of a familiar way of life. I can see that OSCAR has kept abreast of the industry in providing wholesome balanced diets. The quality and basic principles of the business remain the same and my intentions are to run a successful business and to become the number one in turnover and the number one in sales, thus presenting to a third generation of franchisees for OSCAR. Thanks to my parents I have a lot to live up to!
