Riverford Organic Farmers, best known for their iconic veg boxes, are celebrating after a very successful Christmas sales period.
Riverford’s farm staff and network of franchisees worked flat out leading up to Christmas to ensure customers received safe delivery of their Christmas veg, meat and more.
Christmas delivery week has always been the busiest time of year for Riverford and 2016 was no exception. They saw a record-breaking increase in deliveries, as sales were up by over 15% and the average order value rose by 4.9% compared to 2015, turning over more than £2 million in the two weeks prior to Christmas.
Sales of their high welfare, organic meat contributed to the increase with nearly 9000 deliveries including meat compared to less than 7000 in 2015.
Riverford, who will be celebrating 30 years of business this year, believe the key is knowing what their customers want. Their core range performs well year on year, with customers adding cheese, wine and seasonal products like handmade mince pies and Christmas puddings to their orders. This year their new nut roast proved to be a popular product.
Riverford’s Franchise Services Manager Nigel Loveridge believes there are other contributing factors:
"We’ve recently rebranded and have worked hard to tell the story Riverford and its core values of good food, good farming and good business. We want the focus to be on where our produce comes from, how it’s grown and the people that are involved."
Riverford’s Managing Director Rob Haward explained:
"To grow, source, plan, market, pack and deliver this volume of food in one week was a mountainous challenge. Our spirit, commitment and hard work (combined with great planning) were up to the challenge. Everyone from our growers, pickers, packers, drivers, office staff and franchisee network worked extremely hard; I feel proud of what we have accomplished together."
