The Wilkins Chimney Sweep Franchise is a multi-award winning Van-based Chimney Business. Established in 1895 the first franchisees joined the business in 2011 and the team is growing steadily. Wilkins strive to ensure that every franchisee gets the best business opportunity, training, kit, back office systems and support that you would expect from an award winning franchise.
Franchisees primarily sweep chimneys, fit bird protection (cages, caps & cowls) and during the quieter months also offer patio & driveway cleaning.
In the very busy season a sweep will maybe sweep 8-10 chimneys a day. There is a small amount of admin but around a half day each week is spent on banking and managing the business.
Franchisees handle local marketing (with guidance from Head Office), accounts and delivery of the services. Whilst they have people to handle bookings, franchisees are in charge of their own diary so they can accommodate family and social needs.
Wilkins welcome the family being involved in the business.
Franchisees will need to market, advertise and network for new business. Initial training and ongoing marketing support will assist this process.
Most franchisees start as owner-operators but several have expanded into second vehicles with some looking to put a third on the road.
The increase in the number of woodburners installed as well as the constant popularity of open fires keeps sweeps busy across the UK.
Franchisees will need a van, laptop, tablet and phone. In addition the franchise fee is £5,000 plus VAT and the start up package is £13,000 (kit, training, marketing etc)
The total outlay therefore is £18,000 plus VAT. However, an asset finance package, including a vehicle, will bring this initial payment to £13,100 plus subject to the usual checks.
A franchisee can expect to replace a middle managers salary within a couple of years depending on local forces and drive/determination! A business plan will help guide expectations before contracts are signed!
Territories are approximately 100,000 houses and greenfield (unfilled) sites are defined around new franchise locations.
Worthing & Brighton (one territory) is run by Mark Frost, he is looking to retire.
I liked the idea of working for myself doing something more hands on than I had been used to as an ex-surveyor. Franchising gave me professional backup, training and an established name to use.
WILKINS CHIMNEY SWEEP have been very supportive in providing both practical training, and also advice on how to run a business with accounting and tax information.
